accretion – deposition of sediments, which raises the surface of the soil in relation to a reference point, as occurs in a marsh or along a shoreline

algal blooms – sudden and prolific growth in single-celled algae, often caused by excessive amounts of nutrients in runoff entering a body of water, a common cause of fish kills

beneficial uses – using dredged soils from ship channel construction or maintenance to create or enhance habitats, such as marshes or rookery islands

berms – an area of higher elevation or a small structure running parallel to a shoreline

brackish – refers to water with a salt content between that of fresh water and sea water

database – a computer file system providing an organized way to store, manipulate and retrieve information electronically and at low cost

decomposer organism – one that consumes dead plants and animals

detritus – dead and decaying plant and animal matter and associated decomposing organisms

ecosystem – the combination of all living organisms and their non-living environment that can be studied as a separate unit

estuary – a highly productive ecosystem formed where fresh water from rivers mixes with salt waters from oceans

inflow – water entering an estuary from rivers or bayous

inundation – flooding of an area, as when tides come into marshes

invertebrates – animal without internal skeletons, such as insects, crabs and shrimp

midden – large piles of debris, such as piles of shells, created by early inhabitants of an area

neotropical – from Central and South American tropics

plankton – the mix of microscopic plants and animals found floating freely in a water column

ppt – parts per thousand

prairie pothole — isolated, shallow depressions that support freshwater marsh species

riparian – of, on or pertaining to the banks of a river or other body of water

saline – containing salts,  in reference to habitats, it usually refers to waters having 30-40 parts per thousand dissolved salts

spat – young oysters during early growth and attached to a hard substrate

subsidence – loss of elevation of ground, often caused by sinking after extraction of groundwater or petroleum

superfund site – a site contaminated by toxic substances listed by the federal government for clean up

uplands – lands elevated above the effect of tides, water tables, etc
